When Words Can Move a Mountain: Reflections on Feedback for Kano Airport

A few days ago, while waiting to connect my flight from Addis Ababa to Heathrow, I took the opportunity to share honest feedback about the operations at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA). In that article, I highlighted the airport’s standout features while constructively addressing areas that need improvement. If you haven’t read it yet, you can find it via t.ly/PaOPu.

What I didn’t anticipate was the wave of engagement that followed. The article resonated with many, sparking conversations, shares, and even assurances from friends who shared it with influential contacts. Among the responses was a note from Alhaji Mohd Sadiq Kuchi, a member of MAKIA’s AVSEC team, who informed me that the airport authorities wanted to discuss the points I raised. Shortly after, the official Facebook page of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) responded, stating:

“We have taken note of your observations and corrective measures would be put in place to address the issues raised.”

This acknowledgment was encouraging, but what followed was even more remarkable.

A Constructive Dialogue

After coordinating with Alhaji Sadiq, we arranged an online meeting, where I had the privilege of speaking with Alhaji Jibrin Dan Musa, the Regional General Manager/Airport Manager of MAKIA.

The meeting began with pleasantries, but it quickly became evident how seriously the management regarded the feedback. Alhaji Dan Musa expressed gratitude for the article, emphasizing that MAKIA welcomes honest feedback from passengers. In fact, since the article’s publication, he noted that a series of inter-agency meetings had been held to address the concerns raised.

His words carried assurances: travelers could expect noticeable improvements in the coming weeks. He highlighted the importance of passengers sharing their experiences, as such insights help the airport refine its services.

This dialogue was both humbling and fulfilling. It was humbling because the management could have dismissed the article as mere attention-seeking, yet they chose to act on it. It was fulfilling to see that constructive feedback could inspire meaningful action.

The Power of Positive Advocacy

This experience reaffirmed an important lesson: silence serves no one. When systems falter, constructive engagement can pave the way for improvement. Instead of resigning to frustration, spotlighting what works and offering suggestions for improvement can be transformative.

It’s worth noting that the collective effort of readers amplified this impact. Many people shared their own experiences, forwarded the article to their networks, and lent their voices to the conversation. This ripple effect ensured that the concerns reached the right ears.

A Call to Sustain Progress

As I reflect on this journey, my hope is that the RGM and his team will stay true to their word, implementing lasting changes that make MAKIA a source of pride for every Nigerian. However, the responsibility doesn’t rest solely with the management. Travelers must continue to share their experiences — both good and bad — so the airport can build on its strengths and address its shortcomings.

To my fellow travelers: let’s approach feedback with positivity and civility. A mature, solutions-focused approach can inspire change far beyond what we imagine.

MAKIA has the potential to be a shining beacon of Nigerian hospitality and excellence. With collaboration and commitment, we can ensure it fulfills that promise.
